Kane becomes Tottenham’s record goalscorer as Spurs dent City’s title hopes

By Matthew Ireland

HARRY KANE scored the only goal as the England captain became Tottenham’s record goalscorer and denied Manchester City the chance to narrow the gap to Arsenal at the top of the Premier League yesterday.

City headed to north London knowing victory would move them to within two points of the Gunners, who lost for only the second time this season at Everton on Saturday.

But despite bossing possession and the shot count in north London, City failed to find a way through a resolute Spurs outfit, who held on for a 1-0 victory despite heavy City pressure and a late red card to centre-back Cristian Romero.

Kane’s 15th-minute strike was his 267th goal in all competitions for Tottenham, eclipsing the mark of Spurs legend Jimmy Greaves, and his 200th goal in the Premier League.

He is the third player to score 200 goals in the competition after Alan Shearer (260) and Wayne Rooney (208).

The defeat means City remain five points adrift of Arsenal at the top of the table, and they are 11-8 to retain their title having been temporarily a shade of odds-on with some firms after the Gunners’ defeat at Everton.

Arsenal, who are 4-5 to win the league, entertain Brentford and City welcome Aston Villa to the Etihad next weekend before the two title protagonists meet at the Emirates Stadium a week on Wednesday.

Third-placed Manchester United, who beat Crystal Palace 2-1 on Saturday, are 25-1 from 33-1 to win the title after the top two’s losses.

Tottenham remain fifth despite the win but are now only a point shy of Newcastle, who occupy the final Champions League berth.

The Lilywhites, who finished fourth last season, are 7-4 to land a top-four berth for a second season in a row.

At the other end of the table, Nottingham Forest boosted their survival prospects with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Leeds, who remain outside the bottom three only on goal difference.

Brennan Johnson’s superb 14th-minute goal was enough to secure all three points for Forest, who are now unbeaten in five games in the Premier League.

Victory lifted Steve Cooper’s men up to 13th, six points clear of the bottom three, and they are 11-4 for relegation.

The wait for a league victory goes on for Leeds, meanwhile, with Jesse Marsch’s side without a top-flight win since November 5. The Yorkshire outfit have taken just three points from seven games since beating Bournemouth 4-3 at Elland Road.

They are 2-1 from 3-1 to be* relegated, while Marsch is 5-1 with Betfair and Paddy Power to be the next Premier League manager to leave their post.
