Samp slump looks set to continue

By Harry Carr Monza to win to nil

WHILE casual viewers might see Juventus as Serie A’s crisis club, Sampdoria are certainly a contender for that unwanted mantle and risk a points deduction of their own for their failure to pay players’ salaries.

Their off-field troubles have translated on to the pitch, where they have lost nine of their last ten games without scoring.

No side can match Samp’s pitiful tally of eight goals in Serie A this season, which is the worst across Europe’s top five leagues and is seven worse than the next-lowest return in the Italian top flight (winless Cremonese’s 15).

Samp have lost five successive matches to nil since beating Sassuolo in early January and were hammered 3-0 by Monza on their own turf back in October. They appear destined to follow local rivals Genoa into Serie B.

Monza, on the other hand, are enjoying a fantastic campaign after winning promotion last term, and have gone six games unbeaten in Serie A, a run which culminated in last week’s terrific upset at Juventus.

Highflying Inter and

Fiorentina have failed to beat Monza since the World Cup break, and Raffaele Palladino’s men should have few problems in swatting Samp aside – and they may do so with another clean sheet.
