Subjectivist can dethrone Gold Cup king Stradivarius

Prince of Wales’s

A high-class renewal of the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, all eyes will be on Love as the daughter of Galileo makes her much awaited seasonal debut.

One of two representatives for Coolmore’s perennial champion sire, alongside impressive Huxley winner

Armory, last year’s dual Classic heroine is out of a Pivotal mare in Pikaboo who was only rated 55 at her peak.

A full-sister to two Group 3 winners in Flattering and Peach Tree, Love is also a half-sibling to Lowther and Duchess of Cambridge winner Lucky Kristale. This will be her first run against the colts and geldings and it will be fascinating given her facile successes in the Guineas and Oaks.

It is appropriate that a son of Dubawi in Lord North is the main threat to the Galileo duo.

Last year’s winner and Dubai Turf hero is out of the winning Giant’s Causeway mare Najoum, a half-sister to American Grade 1 winner Bandini, and represents a double challenge for the Dalham Hall sire with recent Prix d’Ispahan third My

Oberon, out of a Sea The Stars half-sister to the high-class sprinter Muthmir, bidding for a first top-level success. Breeders’ Cup heroine

Audarya would add to sire sensation Wootton Bassett’s rapid ascent to the elite stallion ranks, while Sangarius, Juddmonte’s son of Kingman and Trojan Queen – an Empire Maker half-sister to Romantica and herself out of the mighty Banks Hill – complete the lineup alongside the venerable Halling gelding and Canadian top-level victor Desert

Encounter.

Gold Cup

Stradivarius stands on the brink of joining the mighty Yeats in winning four Gold Cups and there would be no more popular winner than the characterful son of Sea The Stars.

The Bjorn Nielsen homebred has swept all before him in the staying ranks but he arguably faces a stiffer challenge in last year’s Prix Royal-Oak scorer

Subjectivist.

By the prolific Teofilo and a three-parts brother to the multiple Group-winning 2019 St Leger runner-up Sir Ron Priestley, Subjectivist proved his well being with an emphatic win in the Dubai Gold Cup in March.

The Mascalls Stud-bred colt won the March Stakes on soft by a wide margin, so the forecast rain should pose no fears. Teofilo is himself a wellknown source of stayers, having also provided Melbourne Cup heroes Twilight Payment and Cross Counter in recent years.

Last year’s Long Distance Cup winner Trueshan is a fascinating addition to the staying contest, being by Chapel Stud’s relatively new stallion recruit Planteur and out of a 1m4f heavy ground winner in Shao Line.

Stamina is again not in doubt and he heads to Ascot having produced a fine effort in defeat when giving weight to Japan over an inadequate trip.

It is fascinating to see how Serpentine, a runway winner of last year’s Derby, copes with the step up in trip.

A son of Galileo and out of a half-sister to the top-class middle-distance performer Dylan Thomas, the four-yearold is bred with plenty of stamina on both sides of his pedigree, although his five fullsiblings were ideally suited by trips up to a mile and a half.

Of the remainder, recent Yorkshire Cup hero Spanish

Mission, a son of Noble Mission and the Listed-winning miler Limonar, a daughter of Street Cr y, and last year’s Irish Derby scorer Santiago stand out.

The former has won over 2m2f when winning last season’s Doncaster Cup, while Aidan O’Brien’s charge is by a proven stamina source in Authorized, a Derby winner and the sire of dual Grand National hero Tiger Roll. 1. SUBJECTIVIST 2. Stradivarius 3. Spanish Mission

Commonwealth Cup

Two fillies head the market in last year’s Queen Mary and Prix Morny heroine Campanelle plus the unbeaten Suesa, the pair by leading stallions in Kodiac and Night Of Thunder respectively.

Out of the Listed-winning Namid mare Janina, the TallyHo Stud-bred Campanelle is bred for speed being related to a dual five-furlong winner in Suwaan and out of a Marygate Stakes winner. A 190,000gns purchase from Tattersalls Book 1, the Wesley Ward-trained filly impressed at the track last year and should put up another potent effort.

Suesa entered the fray with two blistering Group wins at Chantilly this spring and bids to provide her Kildangan-based sire with a first European toplevel winner.

A €17,000 purchase from her breeder Thomastown Stud at the Goffs November Foal Sale, she is out of an unraced halfsister to Radley Stakes third Sheboygan.

Last year’s champion firstseason sire Mehmas has enjoyed a fine start to the season and it would be no surprise to see his Group 1-winning son Supremacy return to winning ways after disappointing on his seasonal return.

Last season’s Middle Park winner, a £65,000 purchase from Owenstown Stud at the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale, is from a good family, being out of Triggers Broom, a half-sister to Hong Kong Group 1 winner Xtension and Beatrix Potter, the dam of top-class sprinter Harry Angel.

Other notables for the toplevel six-furlong contest include

Measure Of Magic, a multiple stakes-winning and Group 2-placed daughter of red-hot sire Kodi Bear, and Cheveley Park’s Nell Gywn winner Sacred, by Exceed And Excel and out of an unraced half-sister to multiple American Grade 1 winner Lady Eli.

Sacred was highly tried at two, including when second to Campanelle in the Queen Mary, and is by a renowned speed inf luence in Exceed And Excel. A return to sprinting trips could see her in good light. 1. CAMPANELLE 2. Sacred 3. Supremacy

Coronation

A number of beautifully bred fillies will potentially line up with top-level success at the forefront of connections’ minds.

Newmarket 1,000 Guineas heroine Mother Earth, a daughter of the late Zoffany and the stakes-winning Green Desert mare Many Colours, will attempt to go one better than her French Classic second.

A half-sister to Italian Group 2 winner Night Colours, the Goffs Orby graduate was welltried at two and produced a career-best judged on her Classic success.

In all likelihood she will have to be at her best with two lightly raced types in York Listed scorer Primo Bacio, a daughter of Derrinstown Stud’s Awtaad and the well-related Suvenna, plus Snow Lantern, a daughter of Frankel and the brilliant Sky Lantern who was keen when third in the same contest.

The form of the English and Irish 1,000 Guineas could be further put to the test with

Alcohol Free, by No Nay Never and out of Plying, a $200,000 half-sister to Flying Childers third Kissing Lights, and Pretty Gorgeous, last year’s Fillies’ Mile winner and seventh to Empress Josephine at the Curragh, in attendance.

Sold for E55,000 as a foal, and then picked up for 525,000gns at Tattersalls Book 1, Joseph O’Brien’s runner is by a sire who can produce toplevel milers, having sired the ill-fated Irish 1,000 Guineas scorer Just The Judge and St James’s Palace winner Most Improved.

A hugely eyecatching entry is Cheveley Park homebred

Potapova.

A daughter of the great Invincible Spirit, the dual novice winner is the sixth foal out of the stakes-placed Pivotal mare Safina, herself a daughter of the operation’s Classic and Coronation Stakes scorer Russian Rhythm.

Unusually pitched into Group 1 company after two starts and wins for Sir Michael Stoute, she is evidently held in high regard by connections. 1. MOTHER EARTH 2. Pretty Gorgeous 3. Snow Lantern
