Big handicap of the day can go to the in-form Balding-trained Chil Chil

Wokingham

5.00, 6f handicap

CHIL CHIL is the most appealing option in the day’s big handicap.

Andrew Balding’s mare was officially rated just 63 when getting off the mark at Kempton in August 2019 but she has steadily climbed through the handicap ranks and suggested there was a big prize in her when scoring an emphatic success at Newmarket recently.

Fresh is next on the shortlist. James Fanshawe’s four-year-old needed every yard to get past Pendleton over this course and distance last month but the runner-up has already boosted that form and he is a likely improver in a race that should be run to suit.

It wouldn’t be a big surprise to see Pendleton gain revenge despite meeting his old rival on worse terms. He was returning from a lengthy break that day but travelled well until getting caught in the dying strides and his win at York 15 days later was a big step forward.

Commanche Falls would be a decent second string for Michael Dods if getting in. He stayed on strongly to win at Ripon last time out and still has untapped potential for a trainer whose sprinters often get better with age.

Not many three-year-olds tackle this contest but Rohaan has made huge strides since joining David Evans and two recent Group race victories suggest he is well worth his place in the field.

He did well to overcome trouble in running over course and distance in April and then proved his versatility by winning a heavy ground contest at Haydock.

Hey Jonesy has a patchy record but he won last year’s renewal off just 1lb higher and a third at Chester last month was probably his best run since. He has each-way claims if matching that form.

Mr Lupton has twice come up short in this but rolled back the years to win a decent York handicap last time out and he remains feasibly treated after a 4lb rise.

Punchbowl Flyer has been in the form of his life recently and added a sixth career victory when making all at Haydock last month. He has a form chance, but it will be some performance if he can repeat those tactics in this huge field. 1 CHIL CHIL

Chesham Stakes

Charlie Appleby won the Chesham with Pinatubo in 2019 and he can regain the trophy with NEW SCIENCE.

The son of Lope De Vega cost €260,000 as a yearling and looked a good recruit when making his debut at Yarmouth recently, going off favourite and coming home comfortably clear of a good field. William Buick didn’t have to ask for maximum effort and he should cope with the step up in grade.

Aidan O’Brien’s Point Lonsdale galloped his rivals into the ground when making his debut at the Curragh recently and he looks the main threat in a race that connections quickly named as a likely targetafter the race.

Great Max did well to overcome greenness on his debut at Newbury last Thursday and he is another with the ability to figure if he is allowed to make a quick reappearance.

BELLOSA won’t give up her unbeaten record without a fight.

She won her debut by seven lengths at Newmarket in April and had little difficulty following up in Listed company at the same venue a month later, going off in front and easily holding the late challenge of Fundamental despite hanging left under pressure.

Mutasaabeq found the 2000 Guineas a bit too hot but he wasn’t disgraced in seventh, less than six lengths behind the winner Poetic Flare.

He showed that 7f on good ground is ideal when making all in a good time at Newmarket in April and a return to that level would give him every chance.

Creative Force spent nearly ten months on the sidelines after f lopping in the Coventry Stakes but he has made rapid progress since returning to action.

The gelding easily completed a hat-trick at Newbury last month but that was over 6f and he is not certain to stay this new trip.

Hardwicke Stakes

3.40, 1m4f Group 2 BROOME looks the most reliable option in this openlooking Group 2.

He was below par twice last year but Aidan O’Brien’s charge was a smart three-year-old and he has rediscovered that form this season, rattling off a quick hat-trick before a close Group 1 second at the Curragh where very testing ground blunted his speed.

He has yet to win beyond 1m2f but a close fourth in the 2019 Derby shows he does stay this far.

This could come too soon for recent Epsom second Al Aasy

but William Haggas could still have an interesting contender in the shape of Ilaraab.

This will be his toughest assignment to date but he looked a surefire Group winner when easily striking off 102 at York last month.

The John and Thady Gosdentrained Logician has failed to match the form of his 2019 St Leger success in three subsequent outings but he was entitled to need the run behind Al Aasy at Newbury last month and he might be worth another chance.
