The six-million dollar questions

JAMES STEVENS

Can Invincible Army end the Duke of York drought?

The Duke of York Stakes has been the traditional trial for the Diamond Jubilee, but no horse has won both races in the same season since Royal Applause in 1997.

That drought was close to being broken by Society Rock who was second in this race in 2013 and, while Invincible Spirit failed to follow up in 2002, his son Invincible Army could make amends this year.

He has been impressive in two starts this season and looks the star act in what is arguably a weak sprinting division.

Will the foreign raiders be victorious again?

In the last decade winners of this have come from the US and Australia, while last season the French-trained City Light was just denied by Merchant Navy. He shaped promisingly on his seasonal return and will be looking to go one place better.

North American runners could include the Wesley Wardtrained Bound For Nowhere and Imprimis for Joseph Orseno, while Australian-based Toby Edmonds runs Houtzen.
