WEDNESDAY 3.40 PRINCE OF WALES’S STAKES
SIR MICHAEL STOUTE has won the Prince of Wales’s Stakes three times, with Hard Fought (1981), Stagecraft (1991) and Poet’s Word (2018). The latter ran and won the Brigadier Gerard Stakes before going on to score at Royal Ascot. In Poet’s Word’s case, he showed plenty of ability at three and four but truly blossomed as an older horse and easily accounted for Laraaib and Desert Encounter in the Sandown Group 3. His trainer excels at improving horses steadily and Poet’s Word would go on to win the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot over two furlongs further before a luckless run in the Juddmonte International at York. This year’s Brigadier Gerard winner Regal Reality, who is also trained by Stoute, cannot be discounted in this year’s renewal of the Prince of Wales’s.
