What a few days it’s been for our region

NORTHERN HORSES TO THE FORE

What a great weekend it was for Scottish trainers, and for the north in general.

The Cotswold Chase was won by Ahoy Senor, who thrust himself into the Gold Cup picture for Lucinda Russell. It was a poignant success, as Lucinda’s Dad passed away in the days leading up to the race, but he deserved it and must have a chance at Cheltenham in March now. Ruth Jefferson trained the second, Sounds Russian, too, for good measure.

But they weren’t the only ones. Cooper’s Cross stormed home in the Sky Bet Chase for the father and son team of Stuart and Sam Coltherd, two guys I know really well. That was really pleasing to see, as was Ann Hamilton winning the Grade 2 on that same Doncaster card with Tommy’s Oscar.

They were all ridden by northern jockeys as well – Derek Fox, Sean Quinlan, Sam and Danny McMenamin – it was great to see.
