Czechs 4-1 for group honours after draw

By Matthew Ireland

THE Czech Republic were last night 4-1 with bet365 to win Group D after drawing 1-1 with Croatia at Hampden Park.

Patrik Schick gave the Czechs a deserved first-half lead from the penalty spot – taking his tournament goal tally to three – after VAR awarded a contentious penalty against Croatia defender Dejan Lovren.

Croatia offered little in opposition in the first period but came out with a renewed purpose after the break and drew level thanks to Ivan Perisic’s fine strike on 47 minutes. Both sides had chances after that but neither could land a decisive blow.

The result leaves the Czechs, who travel to Wembley to face England in their final group encounter, on four points after their opening two matches, while Croatia have a solitary point to their name and are likely to have to beat Scotland at Hampden on Tuesday to stand any chance of making the last 16.

Sweden are 9-4 to finish top of Group E at Euro 2020 after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Slovakia in St Petersburg in yesterday’s early kick-off.

Emil Forsberg’s 77th-minute penalty finally broke the deadlock for the Swedes, who had up until that point been frustrated by the Slovakians.

The victory takes Sweden top of the section on four points ahead of Slovakia, who claimed a surprise 2-1 win over ten-man Poland in their first fixture of the finals.
