Hit Man may finish off Montiel quickly

By Henry Hardwicke

THERE are three interesting fight cards from the USA tonight and early tomorrow morning with some big-name boxers in action.

Naoya Inoue’s WBA and IBF bantamweight title defence against Michael Dasmarinas headlines the card in Las Vegas and Monster is a 1-16 shot to hold on to his titles.

The unbeaten Jaime Munguia shouldn’t have too many problems seeing off Kamil Szeremeta in El Paso and that’s reflected in the betting. Munguia will be well known to British fight fans after wins against Gary O’Sullivan and Liam Smith, and Szeremeta goes into this fight after a bruising stoppage loss to Gennadiy Golovkin.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a great deal for punters to get involved in given the uncompetitive nature of the cards, but there may be a bet to have in Houston.

Jermall Charlo defends his WBC middleweight belt against Juan Macias Montiel at the Toyota Centre and again he is an overwhelming 1-33 shot. Charlo is just 1-5 to win the fight by stoppage and that looks the likely outcome.

The prices look about right in those markets but there could be a bit of value in going under the 5.5 total-rounds line.

Montiel was stopped in two rounds by Munguia in 2017 and that loss followed a defeat to Jhony Montano. The Mexican has got his career back on track since those reversals and a win over James Kirkland last time out reads well.

However, his durability is possibly being overplayed after that victory against Kirkland, who is in the twilight of his career and has fought only four times since he was beaten up by Saul Alvarez in 2015.

Charlo has won 22 of his 31 contests by stoppage and he should be far too classy for his Mexican opponent. The Hitman is chasing fights against GGG and Alvarez, so he is likely to want to put on a show in Houston and the American can get the job done in the first half of the bout.
