City look set to leave Revolution in a spin

New York City v New England

By Simon Barlow

12.30am

MLS Eastern Conference leaders New England Revolution head to Red Bull Arena to face a New York City FC side who are starting to click.

The three-week international break came at a bad time for both sides in the sense that the Revs were on a three-game win streak and NYCFC had just stunned Los Angeles FC at home.

That impressive win for Ronny Deila’s men came courtesy of a 90th-minute winner, four minutes after they had been reduced to ten men.

The Cityzens are a much better side than their 2021 results so far suggest and it will be very hard for the Revs to extend their run to four road wins tonight.

Their temporary home in Harrison is nowhere near as much of a fortress as Yankee Stadium, but they can still handle a Revs side who have begun to falter on their travels.

New England won seven of 11 away games between August and November, but have recorded only one win, against lowly Cincinnati, and taken five points from their last five matches on the road.

The Cityzens have scored in 18 straight MLS matches, which is the longest active streak in the league, and they tend to make fast starts.

Delia’s men have scored inside the opening 20 minutes (including two goals before the tenth minute) in four of their six MLS games this term.

It would be no surpriseto see them take another early lead and the best bet could be for New York FC to lead at both half-time and full-time.

The Revs average one goal a game on the road this season and, as a correct-score play, there could be some mileage in backing the hosts to win 3-1.
